Meeting the needs of each pupil

Education and curriculum

Our priority is to make sure all our pupils achieve their personal best.

Our schools focus on the individual learning needs of every pupil, so that the teaching they receive encourages them forwards in their development.

We keep class groups small, from 6 to 12 pupils depending on age, learning ability and need, to personalise learning and promote independence.

'The aims of the Academy Trust are to ensure our pupils become successful individuals, responsible, confident citizens and meet the challenges society provides.'

We have a range of specialists that can support teachers in planning and delivering education, including curriculum specialists, qualified teachers for visual impairments, ICT experts and language and communication professionals.

Our education principles

Although the curriculum and teaching styles vary to meet the individual needs of each pupil, all of our schools follow the same guiding principles:

  • All pupils require an individual education plan

  • All staff have high expectations of pupils' abilities

  • Our parents and carers are integral partners in education

  • Our curriculum is designed to ensure a breadth and balance of learning takes place

  • Lesson plans are developed to suit pupils' learning ability and age

  • Teaching styles vary to meet pupil needs

  • Therapy programmes are integrated into our classrooms

  • Careful monitoring of achievement encourages pupils to achieve their personal best

It seems that in the eyes of Sunshine House staff, every child is 'differently-able' rather than disabled....'special' rather than simply....having 'special needs'

Alexandra School

As a parent of a child with additional needs, knowing he is going somewhere that understands him, allows for his behaviours, and where I know he is safe with people that care for him and want the best for him, makes sending him on the school bus in a morning a whole lot easier.
