Learning Together
We adopt a child-centred approach to teaching where we first build trust and learn how to communicate with each child on their level. Our staff learn about and alongside each child everyday, using this to inform our teaching methods so that they are wholly adapted to the needs of the child. We maintain a flexible integrated multidisciplinary model to deliver a tailored programme of learning, taught in ways that compliments and encompasses each child’s therapeutic provision. This aims to maximise their access to a relevant curriculum that prepares them for every success in later life.

Our Approach to Teaching
Each child will be assessed by our skilled staff and a programme of
targeted learning devised that meets their individual needs, interests,
abilities and enjoyment.
Children are grouped in classes that present the most ideal environment and peer group to support their learning (i.e. based on age, level of engagement and how they communicate). Teaching activities are fun, attractive and multi-sensory, and, as a result, children are engaged and make progress.
We work hard to ensure that every child has a voice, We look for frequent opportunities for children to share this, expressing their needs, wants and wishes. Responding to this quickly and with sensitivity helps us get the best from each individual child and helps them to develop into confident learners.
We know that every child’s achievements are a result of close, caring support
in school and at home.
We are fully aware that a child’s development continues outside of the school day, so strive to work closely with families to share our approaches or activities.
In developing a shared understanding of a child’s experiences each day, we can best plan how to engage them in their next steps in learning. For example, we:
- share your child’s achievements through their home school diary,
- maintain an open-door approach, welcoming parents into the school where possible,
- hold meetings during term to discuss your child’s progress,
- actively contribute to multi-professional meetings whenever appropriate.
Encouraged to meet their full potential
Our Curriculum
Children under five broadly follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. We advocate that these children continue to attend Sunshine House on a full-time basis wherever possible to gain maximum benefit from our specialist input.
We know that this can be daunting for some families and therefore try hard to build trusting bonds and confidence in the first few weeks.
Those over five years follow a full-time curriculum supporting their special education needs. This is differentiated according to their cognitive level of working, communication competency, age and interests.
Every child has an individual education plan, so their learning and development is at the right level and pace for them.
Daily activities are varied, inspiring and educational. Lessons will often involve a range of whole group work, small groups or one-to-one. This is made possible by our enhanced staff to pupil ratio in every class.
